a new cartridge of .277" caliber, said to be of better performance than the current 6.8x43 remington spc cartridge, and to be used in the next iteration of the m-16 type rifle. (i've seen sig sauer's new rifles ... they look very little different from the m-16/m-4 lineage in layout. why fix it, if it ain't broke ... just gussy it up, and charge more for it.)
what i have not been able to find about the 6.8mm "hybrid" cartridge is anything other than a picture, which shows a bullet sticking out of a plastic case, and certain manufacturer's assertions that it offers enhanced performance over the 6.8mm remington spc, spec ii. i am underwhelmed at this point.
if it goes into a rifle with magazine proportions and dimensions about the same as presently made, w/ "standard" dimensions, i would expect little performance gain. you can only get ten gallons into a 10 gallon hat, after all, and the capacity of a cartridge case for a given amount of powder yields a certain performance level, for a certain bullet weight. the size of the cartridge, and its internal capacity, is determined to a very great extent by the size and volume of its magazines.
simple as that.
so, unless the 6.8 "hybrid"'s case has more volume, there will be little or no performance increase. simple as that.
we shall see. time will tell. simple as that.

re: the cartridge
this weapon is to be fielded as an automatic weapon, probably at the squad level, and as an infantry weapon, capable of semi-auto fire (at the least.)
i've seen pictures of the proposed "hybrid" cartridge. as represented, how they are going to get this decidedly "unslick" & dumpy looking round to feed into an automatic weapon is way beyond me.
i don't think it can be done, without substantial changes in the shape of the round. and, if anything, such changes will reduce the internal case dimensions.
i just don't see how, in the real world, it offers any performance gain in the 6.8mm rem spc, as presently constituted.
gyrojet, anyone?
