hat tip "c."
this essay is by abraxas, and it goes a long way in explaining why donald trump is president of the united states. and, why certain of us (and in no small numbers) will fight, as in "engage in mortal combat," to keep him president.
follows the essay:
For nearly all last year my friends begged me to listen to one of Trump's campaign speeches but I didn't. I was too cynical to think any political harangue could be interesting - or believable. But I was wrong and, Lord, did I discover that today when, for the first time in my life, I listened to him speak. It blew my socks off. I sat there in front of my computer screen listening to the live streaming of his speech on YouTube and my mouth dropped open in astonishment. I had never heard such a riveting, thrilling speech in my life, the hairs on the back of my arms stood up. This man has the power of speech and charisma I've not witnessed since the days of Reagan. I was blown away, just blown away.
What astonishes me even more is all my friends saying - 'Oh, Carolyn, he's like this ALL the time!' Unbelievable. For the first time, I comprehend why so many Americans love him, why soldiers are saying they'll lay down their lives for him in an instant. The man is awesome. And he's totally fearless. During that speech, he did something NO political candidate has done in my memory. He called up one of the people out of the audience and introduced him as someone who'd been interviewed by the press and had told them to stop blocking the president and just let Trump get things done. The guy had been so excited to see Trump that he'd gotten to the hangar at 4 in the morning in order to get a spot. And when the man was finally freed from the grip of the Secret Service to crawl up on stage and stand next to the president, Trump did something else that blew me away. He stood back, stopped talking and let the man speak. This was such a risky thing to do. For God's sake, this stranger wasn't vetted, he wasn't prepared, there was no way in hell you could have known what was going to come out of his mouth - he could have started screaming obscenities or hollered he was for Hillary, for all we knew. Which is why no career politician would ever have risked that. But Trump isn't a politician, he's a leader and a patriot - and he loves Americans. And because he loves them, he trusts them which is why he wasn't scared to let this total stranger speak.
Why? Because Trump likes people, he honestly likes them. He's not ice cold like Hillary with her agonized grimace revealing how disgusting she finds ordinary Americans, he's not arrogant like Obama who treats people like dirt because they are dirt in his opinion, and Trump isn't racist like Michelle who sneered about having to wash herself after a white man touched her during a campaign stop. Trump loves and respects the American people and it radiates from him like the sun, warming you and filling you with hope. And you saw all of that, felt all of that today when he called that stranger up from the crowd to speak. The poor guy, once he got there, was shaking so hard with this stunned 'Oh, my GOD I'm standing next to the president!' look on his face. The guy screamed into the mike (I've never seen a person so excited), "Mr. President, thank you, sir! We, the people, our movement, is the reason why our president of the United States is standing here in front of us today." At this point, the man was overcome and stopped talking which made Trump come up and give him a pat, encouraging him to go on. The man finally recovered himself. "When President Trump during the election promised all these things that he was going to do for us, I KNEW he was going to do this for us!" At this, the man babbled his thanks to Trump and stumbled off stage which made the crowd suddenly erupt with "USA!" loud and long. Trump then cracked into the mike that "I wouldn't say that Secret Service was thrilled with that but we know our people, right? We know our people." And that says it all, folks. He knows us and the reason he knows us is because he loves us and every last man, woman and child in that hangar knew it too. They were loved, they were honestly and truly loved. The crowd went wild and, frankly, so did I. Wow, just wow.People, watch this video of his speech today. It will blow you away. It starts inside an airplane hangar in Melbourne, Florida because that was the only place that could hold such a huge crowd. Actually, it didn't. The hangar could only contain about 8,000 excited Americans but 35,000 showed up and so the overflow had to wait outside. The President arrived with Melania and she introduced him on stage - but FIRST she did something that also blew me away. Without hesitation, she calmly recited the Lord's Prayer. Wow, just wow again. And then he began to talk.Folks, you've just got to listen to this. It will warm you from the top of your head down to the soles of your feet. We've got a president who's loves us and loves our country! Oh, man, it doesn't get better than that.
the thesis advanced by abraxas is quite simple.-- people respond to donald trump because he likes and admires the american people, and knows we can do much if we are not hindered and throttled by idiots who think they know better than we do.
i think abraxas has hit the nail squarely on the head. he doesn't patronize, he doesn't hector, and he doesn't pontificate. he simply calls upon us to do the best we can, and he has faith in us to do it. simple as that.

Watched the whole speech.
Even the coverage preceding the speech. One could see the long lines of supporters.
Awesome and telling as to how we "deplorables" really feel about this man

It's good to be a dirt person, yes sir.
It's even better being a dirt person in a country of dirt people.
