parting out a 2002 range rover discovery ....

seats, in good condition, and both front seats are power seats, w/ several servo motors, and i believe though i do not guarantee that they have a "memory" function. steering wheel.

transmission, .. , transfer case, .. , axles, locating arms, drive lines and coil springs, .. , fans, .. , interior panels, .. , induction and ignition system, and the computer is still intact and in place, .. , and, i keep the motor. please note: the tires, wheels and the axles go last, as i've got no way to move this vehicle around without them.

(previous own lost the keys, sorry, but, you'll have to go to a range rover dealer and get a replacement key.) the radio and speakers go. the dash is complete, and it goes.

i recently succeeded to ownership of a 2002 range rover discovery, purchased by another at an insurance salvage auction. i hold the bill of sale, ... , (the title documents are held by the state of washington dept. of motor vehicles when the vehicle goes into salvage, to prevent trafficking in titles.)

i am going to part it out. in other words, i will sell parts from the vehicle until no one buys any more, and then it will go to scrap.

i am retaining the engine, and the transmission. everything else is for sale. included in that sale will be the intake manifold, the mass air sensor assembly, and the engine computer and electronics. i also have the four seats from the car, including the front seats which are electronically controlled, and most of the interior panels, including seat belts and speakers for the radio. i am told that the radio functions, but i do not know that.

the parts are not warranted, express or implied, and i make no representations that they are fit or otherwise for any particular purpose.

price: price is open to negotiation. i do not intend to gouge anyone. neither do i intend to give anything away. if you are interested in some parts, let me know. i have down a little "research" on market price on some of the components likely to be of interest, and i have a rather good idea of market dictates. i will sell a little under the market, as my neighbors want this thing out of my back yard.

you make an offer. i will tell you what my price is, if your offer is not acceptable. if we do not have a meeting of the minds, then there is no deal. if we have a deal, it is subject to the terms set forth below.

caption: as i am given to understand the situation, the car was involved in a rollover accident. the canopy has been taken off w/ a saw-z-all, and all the exterior sheet metal removed, to include doors.

i have most of the interior trim, to include radio/stereo speakers and seat belts. i do not have all the fasteners, and the fasteners i have, ... , well, i've not the slightest idea what they fasten. i did not "take the car apart."

caption: the console and the dash appear intact, but i do not know what, if anything, functions.

the person from whom i acquired it lost the key. this is rather important, from what i am given to understand, as the car will not function without a proper key.

you succeed to that problem, if you buy any of the electronics.

i want no part of it. i will retain the motor and the transmission, but, the intake manifold and the computer, plus the mass air flow system are for sale. i will only sell them as a unit, as i have no interest in having parts around that are worthless to me.

the radiator is missing. i am assuming that it was damaged in the wreck. if anyone is interested in purchasing any of this stuff, i will try to arrange to secure the appropriate fittings and such to go with the various parts that are sold. i make no warranty or assurance that this will be done correctly.

making everything "fit" on your end, is all part of your grand adventure, just as it will be my adventure to make use of the engine and transmission.

and, truth be told, if you want the transmission, make a bit. i am not all that convinced that i can make use of it.

purchased whole. i would prefer to sell it all at once. if you want to purchase it of a whole piece, the terms of delivery are simple. you drive to my address with a truck capable of hauling it, you pay me cash for the agreed purchase price, and then you load it, haul it off, and assume all risk of transport.

just as you assume all risk of purchase.

purchased in pieces. i am not an auto mechanic.

part of your purchase price will be paying for a mechanic to take the parts off in proper order, and not to damage them while doing so; this price will be negotiated prior to any agreement on sale. and, the full purchase price will be paid by cashiers check or wire deposit into a designated account, before any part is dis-assembled.

you will also advance the cost of shipment, prior to consummation of purchase. so, terms are simple. full payment for the part, for shipping and for handling & dis-assembling are tendered to me, and receipt confirmed, before anything happens.

the aluminum buick .... the little engine that range rover done wrong .... now i understand ....

before, i did not, and now, i do. understand, that is.

understand how the buick engine used by rover from 1967 into the 21st century could have a well deserved & stellar reputation for much of its life, almost its entire life, only to have that reputation sullied, and to be maligned for mechanical reliability in the last few years of its production.

why did the reliability of something that had been great suddenly sour?

that's what i was reading. it made no sense to me.

and, then i read a short little piece on line by/at a shop that specializes in range rover 4.0 & 4.6 liter v8 repair. among the things that they have problems with are warped heads, bad gaskets, and a reputation for leaking coolant into the cylinders, and causing heating & block problems, ... , an entire litany of problems capable of being settled only by $15,000 repairs.

(this last one completely mystified me, .... , if you look at the buick block, you will see how massive it is in dimension, .... , how could you not get a good gasket seat when the damned gasket is about an inch "wide" in all directions all over the top of the block/cylinder mating surfaces?)

and, then, i read it. it wasn't about the "top hat" sleeves put in on the rebuild that solved the mystery for me. hell, rover has been putting the same sleeves in since 1967, why the troubles in the early 2,000's?

is there a small block chevy/ford/dodge mechanic on the face of god's little green earth could not have explained this to range rover.

now i understand, what i did not understand. rover drove the reputation of one of the finest motors ever made right into the ground, (and damaged there own reputation, seriously) because they used head bolts.

and, not only that, they tightened them to "yield." in short, pre-stretched them. (just in case a 10.25 to 1 compression ratio would not work to do so, somehow, before the damned things worked loose. head bolts do that. they work loose. i was a lawyer, and i know that. sheesh.) of all things.

i hope the engineers/bean counters who recommended this manufacturing & assembly expedient, to save money i suspect, get set on "high" when they do their time in hell for such silliness. or, "broil." i am not vengeful, they can have their choice.

p.s. what does a good set of studs cost?

hint: studs pull from both ends .... bolts push, from the cap screw. bolts simply are not as strong, and do not hold position as will a stud. i will abandon that position when nascar & dragster types begin using bolts in the place of studs. i don't know much about diesel motors, but, i would be astounded to hear that heads are bolted on, and not held by studs as fasteners.

lovely pictures, for those who count with their thumbs, and need visual aids .... 1.)look at the size of the mating surfaces on the top of the block on the 4.0 engine, and 2.)see the piston that has been exposed to coolant damage from a leaking gasket.

the slide show is wonderful, and it really shows what a sturdy little motor the buick really is. a beautiful design, ... , this, and the derivative 3.8 liter gm v6 are among the best push rod engines ever built.

and, the pictures show very clearly the problems rover has caused w/ coolant leaks, and head gaskets, but the use of bolts. the pictures also show what a really quality build this machine shop has. why can a machine shop figure out what a major manufacturing/industrial concern cannot? why does every pimply 11 year old gear head in the world who reads hot rod magazine know, what rover apparently did not/perhaps doesn't.

build "efficiency," using automated gang tools to fasten bolts may be quick, it is quick, but it does not necessarily lead to a better product, or one with the appropriate longevity.

intelligence ... perspective ... just about the same ...

tim duncan is a 40 year old basketball player in the nba, who will one day be in the hall of fame. he is, as they say, a dead lock on that, on the first ballot. you may have heard of him.

you probably have not heard of gregg popovich. he happens to be the coach of the san antonio spurs, and tim duncan plays for him.

it has been a relationship that has benefited both men, immensely. both are dedicated to the game, and both are very intelligent, and a deep understanding of the game duncan plays, and that popovich coaches.

this is what i mean. listen to gregg popovich:

"the end is coming, though, [for time duncan's career.] popovich said he had a hard time imagining duncan make much of a fuss when he does decide to retire. popovich said he could see duncan simply getting up from the bench in the middle of a game and heading toward the tunnel, never to return.

"' it'l be just like it hit him: i'm done,' popovish said. 'and, as soon as he does that, i'll be ten steps behind him, because i'm not stupid.'"

gregg popovich knows which side of the bread is the butter, and he knows that as he has made duncan in no small measure, tim duncan has made him in large measure. he also knows that coaching will not be the same without tim duncan.

i expect that tim duncan knows full well that his nba career would not have been the same without tim duncan. both men bent their egos to the goal of winning, and they teamed to do just that.

an exemplary team & partnership, showing the quality and benefit of having both intelligence, and a perspective devoid of ego.

"occam's razor" .... now what, just exactly, did two iranians on false i.d.'s and passports hope to achieve in china upon their arrival ....

as to the two iranians on false passports, and phony i.d.'s.

just what did they hope to achieve when they got to china? did they anticipate a friendly reception?

much was made in the early days of the mh 370 story that the photo of these two worthies in the airport had been very crudely photo shopped by the malaysians. but, with regard to this matter, i have never seen published the original unaltered photo, have you?

and, to the best of my knowledge, there has been little else published about them. no investigation, apparently, into their backgrounds and skills, and training. now, the "occam's razor" boys have buried these little details under the false cloak of simplicity, never to be treated or examined again.

a little "detail," declared harmless, and ignored. the search for truth is not honored by such tactics.

it is one thing should they turn out to be agronomists, interested in the cultivation of bamboo. it would be another thing entirely, should they turn out to be trained aviation technicians, skilled in avionics, and the control of boeing 737 avionics, don't you think?

why do we not know these matters? why have such things not been looked into, and reported upon.

why "occam's razor" doesn't necessarily provide the best shave .... on the misuse of the "logic of simplicity," and flight 370 ....

in the matter of "logical necessity." or, the misuse of "occams's razor" in the discussion of flight 370, and its fate.

i am all for simplicity and elegance in the explanation of things. and, generally speaking, the simpler the thing, the more complete it is. this goes as much for explanation and exposition as anything.

but, "occam's razor" has been abused in the quandary over the fate of flight mh 370. it is one thing to desire the simplest explanation of some occurrence. it is quite another to invoke "simplicity," so that one may avoid having to bring up nettlesome "details," and to avoid having to come up with an explanation that accounts for the complexity added by such "details."

to invoke "simplicity," to ignore "complexity," to avoid the necessity of accounting for "complexity," is an intellectual fraud.

simple as that. or, as complicated as that.

and much of this fraud has gone on w/ mh 370, covered by the assertion of "occam's razor." the plane very well may have "simply" crashed in the ocean .... but, why the iranians w/ no passports, why the flight simulator in the captain's house, why the visit to the sentencing of a muslim on trial for terrorism, by the plane's captain, the morning of the flight, why the rise to an altitude above the plane's operational ceiling before a radical change in course, why the silencing of the plane's transducers, ... , and, a host of other details.

it will not do to idiotically cite occam, and then ignore other issues, and claim the necessity of "simplicity" for having done so.

"occam's razor" does not make a virtue of being simple minded.

i've done my part, and been largely ignored for five or six years, so you*** are on your owned dealing w/ the piss-ant obama, and the jerks clinton and kerry, and the hangers-on, reid & pelossi. i warned you, and told you all you needed to know, and i was but a minor voice in the flood of information you had available to you. you ignored me roundly, and didn't pay much more attention to my betters that you did read.

so, i have a clear conscience. you were warned, adequately and thoroughly, and you chose to feign ignorance, or to remain firmly ensconced in your ignorance.

so, be that as it may (or may not be, but you have my opinion on the matter.)--

i have a jeep to restore.--

caption: a 1948 willys cj2a, bought from a fellow who purchased it at an insurance salvage sale. it has been in a minor garage fire (a major fire, and it would have been sitting on the rims, and everything in it reduced to a char.)

it should clean up rather nicely. the motor is a question mark, and i may end up putting a small general motors 60-degree v-6 in it. no reason for any sort of a high powered engine, as the stock "go devil" inline 4 cylinder flathead produced right at 60 hp, and that is what the drive train is designed around.

go ahead, make an offer, and see how far you get.

i have a shop to clean up.--

caption: imagine a shop, the entire floor and contents covered with a nice layer of pigeon poop, just like this, and a portion of it mixed in with the debris from a small roof fire and "roof repair." that would be shattered and charred pieces of roofing & wood, and mops fixed solidly in the bottom of tar buckets, and the like.

ah, the heady aroma of dried pigeon shit and dessicated pigeon carcasses. the romance of it makes one sorta misty.

and, i have a minor door repair on my brother's house that i've let slide.

so, unless something momentous happens, like civil war or something like that, you won't be seeing much of me this summer. i've work to do.

a survival tip .... "crisco" candles ....

hat tip carolyn e., via gid.

i came across this in my email today, one of those "red neck" engineering things that everybody gets such a kick out of. at the very bottom, a little poster, showing a can of "crisco" with a burning wick sticking out of it. the caption says, take a chop stick, shove a wick to the bottom of a can of crisco, and you get a candle that burns for 45 days.

the commentary says, shove three or four wicks in, and you have a heat source sufficient to boil water and cook over. i don't know about that, but, it very well could be.

"crisco," by the way, is a trade name for a lard substitute, good for making biscuits and the like. pie crusts, pot pie crusts, ... , the like. it's made from vegetable oils, but, what it is, friends, is fat.

i see no reason why it wouldn't work as a splendid candle, as advertised, and i would not be surprised at all if three or four burning wicks could not heat water in a seasonable fashion.

a good tip.

roses, iris, and soon the lilies .... a cold, wet and tumultuous spring, but my, how the flowers have bloomed ...

for friend fuchs, and "joseph's coat."

it's been a wet, cold and blowy spring, and even this morning's sky was gray and black, with heavy clouds piling up against the foothills and mountains, before being hustled by the winds to the north. (our weather comes, mostly, from the southwest, courtesy the columbia gorge.)

makes no difference. the flowers at my little shack bloom in profusion, seemingly goaded by the lack of attention & care from me. they've done just fine this year, courtesy of the weather.

iris. (i think. i am not much on flowers. i like roses, and grape hyacinth. laughing.)

lilies. not yet, but, relatively soon

just as a joke, i put a live link at the bottom called "miniature rose care guide." i think it is kind of funny. i don't know what you can do to kill them, short of shearing them off at the ground, turning the soil and salting it. as rome did to the forgotten guy in libya .... see, it worked.

my wild rose ....

not tended, nor watered, nor pruned, for most the year it is pretty hard to tell if my little bushes are alive or dead.

and, then it gets leaves, a sparse few, and some buds, which don't look very promising, ... , and, then it blooms.

caption: no "beds." no pruning. absolutely no care nor attention. the wild rose is an independent little cuss, and proud of it.

and, produces lovely flowers. they are so far removed from the luxuriant cultured roses that have names, and a following sometimes amounting to cult status, that it is hard to believe my humble little roses are even roses.

they are just beautiful.

caption: there are actually two bushes, you can tell the difference in the limbs, as they have different textures and thorns. one produces the yed & yellow flower, the other a flower a singular yellow.

i find them lovely. like a freshly scrubbed audrey hepburn, without makeup or artifice. not perfect, just delicate and lovely.

there is absolutely nothing "showy" about the wild rose flower. it is simple, and understated, and hardly "elegant." just a beautiful country girl unadorned by the artifice of her kind, just simple beauty, a young milkmaid with the bloom of youth in her cheeks. (well, you get the point.)

i love these little flowers. they are simply as nature crafted them. rugged. resilient. lovely.

and, very perishable. they don't stay long, my little flowers.

"we have met the enemy, and he is us ... ."

walt kelly's pogo uttered these words, as he disembarked his row boat on the shore, having gone to the other side of the swamp to meet "the enemy." his putative expedition returned with truth, and not conquest. were all conquerors so wise.

the drug trade. there would be no neighborhood turf wars to control the drug traffic, no crime controlled distribution scheme for the marketing of drugs, no drug cartels, no societies crippled by the growing of marijuana and poppy seed, ... , were it not for the insatiable demand on the street for drugs.

if our nature did not govern us.

the "drug trade" would dry up in a week, if no one bought drugs.

it is as simple as that.

big government. government gets bigger because of an insatiable demand for its "services," e.g., because everybody demands a hand out. people want government "assistance" for everything.

if the federal government confined its function to providing for the military, securing our borders, and maintaining the national freeway system for the quick transfer of military troops, then the government would not be so large, so all encompassing, and so intrusive into every aspect of our lives.

granted, some want power and control. but, their desire for power and control, and an apparatus by which to implement it, e.g., government, would wither on the vine were it not for the demand for service, and program, and assistance at every level.

if it weren't in our nature to acquire something for "nothing."

simple as that.

the trade in illicit sex, and sex trafficking. no tickee, no washee.

no johns, no whores. no demand, no supply. if our nature did not confuse sensation for pleasure, sex for companionship.

simple as that.

we are the enemy. we are confronted daily by our great enemy, our nature and our appetite, and our disinclination to see our own responsibilities in the overall scheme of things.

we could use some "better nature." without recourse to the same, surely & soon our own great enemy will turn with a vengeance upon us, as we turn upon ourselves. we shall surely fail to see that we are our own worst enemy, that it is our own competitive desire to acquire things without costs that sets us upon ourselves.

if we do not get things under control, both in regard to our own appetites, and to the appetites of those who would govern and regulate them, then surely war is in the offing, as a society rent asunder attempts to right itself.

we shall war upon ourselves, at war with our own natures, which we have failed to restrain, to control. where there is no discipline, there is only chaos.
