buy u.s. military field manuals.
they are virtual encyclopedias on field craft. how to read and make maps, understand terrain, and how to mission plan. how to hit, and get the hell out of dodge.
there's fighting. there's shooting.
i have absolutely no truck with fighting. you can get yourself killed fighting, through no fault of your own, ... , just a luck of the draw sort of thing, you get into a fight.
shooting, on the other hand, depends on a certain amount of guile, care and planning, and an "exit" plan. made in advance. shooting, if you become good at it, also allows you to do things from a lot safer distance, and hopefully you will get good enough at it to give yourself something of a cushion to make you exit, in a dignified manner.
for shooting, i recommend the following. -- "the ultimate sniper," by maj. john l. plaster, usar (ret.).
it teaches you how to hide. how not to be seen, nor noticed. to skulk.
read it. understand it. basically, avoid anything that even remotely smells like a fair fight. avoid such situations, at all costs. again, you can get killed in a fair fight. hell, at my age, it is kind of inevitable. there is a reason kids fight wars.
so, that is why you become a shooter. a creature of the rocks and shadows. a creature of dusk. (and, be mindful of the guy who is carrying the thermal imaging scope. always.)
