*** i use the word "man" w/ reservations.  i have no other suitable word to use, the language fails me.  i suppose i could use the word "entity," but i find such usage strained.  anyone have any useful suggestions, for such situations?  ("worm" comes close, but is not very dignified, and you know me, always dignified and civil.)
