i had the powder measure set up the other day to throw 6.6 grains of imr "trail boss" into a 6.8mm remington spc cartridge case.
just out of curiosity, i decided to throw two charges into a fired 7.62mm nato case that i had lying around, so, into the 7.62mm nato went two throws from the powder measure. total charge weight was 13.2 grains of imr "trail boss," right to the level in the case where the bottom of a 168 grain sierra would go, if loaded to nominal total length.
hmm??
some day i am gonna get a 7.62mm nato rifle, and fire it over the chronograph to see what the velocity is. i bet you, dimes to donuts, that it is not over 1050 feet per second, ... , well, not by very much. i am thinking that a .308 caliber bullet, somewhere in the neighborhood of 190 to 200 grains would be right at 1000 fps or so.
hmm??
this imr "trail boss" may lead to a number of very interesting loads in commonly available military cartridges, such as would lend themselves to very flexible use if a good "whisper" capable load could be added to the cartridge's repertoire.
i will keep you posted. perhaps in a year or so.
