truth or consequences, new mexico.
my eldest child, by 7 1/4 minutes, daughter amelia graduated from physical therapy school this 11th day of june.
younger sibling & twin duncan and i motored up to spokane for commencement, and chatted of many things during the trip: washington is a big state, lots of free time in a car on the freeway. i mentioned that a friend was born in enterprise, oregon and he replied, "they are enterprising there, eh?"
well, he is as bad as i am, and that set us off, after i said, "what do you think they would call the place, 'sloth' , oregon."
duncan replied, "how about 'no prospects,' oregon?" to which i replied, "ever hear of 'dismal, delaware'?"
"or, 'just plain dreary', ohio?"
there is in fact, a "boring", oregon, probably my favorite place name in the state. my brother lives in boardman, oregon to which he refers to as "boredom", oregon.
and, so it goes, during 3 1/2 hour car trips. but, what would we do, without the promoters in the local chambers of commerce, men & women with vision (let us refrain from calling it lying, and just concede them a certain poetic license for most towns) the rest of us can only aspire to. what, would you like to live in "flat," kansas. or, "death by thirst," utah? there is, somewhere i don't remember along the road, a "poverty flats," a rare bit of candor probably inspired by incipient starvation. no chamber of commerce involved, there.
"terrorism," district of columbia? anyone?
