we have so turned away from the ideas, and the intelligence & judgment behind them, that got us to this station that they no longer nurture us. and, moreover, there is no one left to nurture the ideas, so they lie forgotten. in books that have not been checked out of college libraries for 20 years, neglected, not teaching.
those ideas, their intelligence, no longer sustain and guide us. they do not inspire us.
so, we are lost. we have no motivation, we have no spirit, no animus, because we believe in nothing. (except comfort, and the freedom from exertion.)
we are lost. so we have lost this election. and, nobody has a clue why.

p.s. bruce hanify used to pitch "the great books." he gave up. people twit now. they don't read, and they are incapable of thought much elevated from the banal. why, yes, i am in a wonderful mood, now that you ask.
it's been this way for a long time. i had hoped, believed, that the issues were so in focus because of obama that people might rise from their torpor, and do something about it.
i was wrong, i think.
they do not inspire us.
