the last picture in the photo essay is of general douglas maccarthur on the decks of the uss missouri, "big mo," signing the treaty that ended of the war, flanked by lt. general jonathan wainwright, who surrendered bataan to the japanese, and british lt. general a.e. percival who surrendered singapore, during those dark days when the axis powers seemed unstoppable.
